VAIL — “Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!” — The Grinch.
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail is kicking off the festive season with the unveiling of the fourth annual WhoVail, a life-sized Dr. Seuss Whoville-inspired gingerbread house, on Friday at 4 p.m.
Built in-house by the resort’s master carpenter Frank Bontempo, WhoVail resides in the alcove off the front entrance. This year’s 140-square-foot structure is made with more than 2,500 gingerbread tiles and 360 pounds of icing.
Inside is a fireplace and hearth, along with gingerbread tiles decorated by more than 50 children from Red Sandstone Elementary School. The structure’s detail and pattern work surround three entrances of different sizes.
Executive Pastry Chef Andrew Schweska and his “elves” have hidden 10 themed cookies in and around WhoVail. Search high and low for a Flame cow, candy cane, Santa Claus, a snowman, the Grinch, a fish, Dr. Seuss hat, Max the dog, Christmas tree and a gingerbread man.
The Grinch, a few elves, resort General Manager Brent Martin and special guest Fizzy Bruno, starring as the Grinch’s dog, Max, will be present on the town of Vail’s officially proclaimed WhoVail Day, along with holiday carols by the Vail Mountain Middle School Choir and complimentary green eggnog, cider and cookies.
