AVON — In celebration of the planet, The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa at Beaver Creek Mountain is hosting a special 108 Sun Salutations Yoga Event with Surya Trobaugh on Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

A sun salutation — or surya namaskar — is the ancient technique of paying respect and expressing gratitude to the sun as the source of all life on our planet. Trobaugh will guide the first several salutations, then as a community, the group will flow from one salutation to the next.

This free event will be held in Studio Anjali; it is open to the public, with no advanced registration required.

CELEBRATING EARTH DAY

As the first resort in Colorado to achieve LEED silver certification, The Westin currently has more than 150 active sustainability guidelines in place. In honor of Earth Day on Wednesday, the resort will also offer tips on how to reduce your water consumption and place eco-friendly tales like “The Lorax” and “Where the Bees Come From” in public spaces throughout the resort.

A major environmental focus this year for The Westin is continuing to reduce its water consumption. In 2014, the resort’s overall occupancy increased by 2 percent, but its water usage decreased by 5 percent.

The Westin is also a proud participant of the Clean the World program, which sends partially used amenity bottles and soap products to people in need in the developing world. Last year, The Westin donated more than 1,078 pounds of waste, including 1,976 bars of soap and 1,415 plastic water bottles.

This year, the resort also plans to implement a composting program and will complete an LED light bulb retrofit in all public hallways. The Westin is also installing a repurposed pool bar that was originally created for the 2015 FIS Alpine World Championships by a local artist and made from reclaimed pine beetle kill wood.
