VAIL, Colorado – Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival will present a free family concert by the National Repertory Orchestra at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater Thursday 11 a.m. in Vail, Colorado. Complimenting the event will be Bravo’s Instrument Petting Zoo, a traveling hands-on exhibition of orchestral instruments, beginning at 10 a.m.

Under the direction of Maestro Carl Topilow, the National Repertory Orchestra is comprised of 89 talented musicians chosen from leading conservatories and music schools across North America. The musicians participate in an intensive, eight-week fellowship and residency in Breckenridge, Colorado. During the fellowship, musicians develop a broad repertoire and strong performance skills, as they perform 29 concerts during their residency. This year’s free family concert, Fancy Fiddlin’, will feature music from a wide variety of composers, including Copland, Gould, and Strauss.

Participation in the NRO is a solid step in preparing young musicians for a career in orchestral music. The NRO boasts alumni such as Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist for the New York Philharmonic and Emmanuelle Boisvert, concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

In conjunction with the free family concert, Bravo’s Instrument Petting Zoo will be available one hour prior to the concert. A well-known part of Bravo’s Music Matters educational programming, children of all ages are given a mini-lesson on orchestral instruments and allowed to play instruments ranging from violins to trumpets and drums.

“We really enjoy having the Zoo in conjunction with the free family concert,” said Bravo’s Community Outreach and Education Director Liz Campbell. “At the family concert, Roper Music in Grand Junction generously donates additional instruments, such as a French horn, bass, and saxophone. These instruments really pump up the excitement at the event!”
