Free firewood in West Vail

Daily Staff Report
Vail, Co Colorado

VAIL, Colorado ” Free firewood is available in West Vail near Snowberry Drive.

Before gathering firewood, you must obtain a free permit from the Holy Cross Ranger Station in Minturn. The permits are limited and will be handed out on a first-come, first served basis.

Firewood fees are normally $10 per cord, but after hundreds of trees were cut down as part of the Vail Valley Forest Health Project, there’s a lot of wood that needs to be removed from the ground. This is one way the public can help, says the Forest Service.

“Some residents in the West Vail area would like to see more of the cut-up trees removed rather than burned in piles later this fall,” said Cary Green, acting district ranger for the Holy Cross/Eagle Ranger District.

After obtaining a permit, you can drive up Snowberry Drive to access the gathering area. The permit is only valid for down, dead wood within the designated boundaries. Only two cords of firewood are allowed per household. Firewood gathered in this area cannot be resold.

Participate in The Longevity Project

The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

These free firewood permits will expire on Sept. 30.
