Free Nordic walking tours offered Aug. 21

Daily Staff Report

BEAVER CREEK – The resort’s hiking center will lead two free Nordic walking tours Aug. 21. The first is from 10 a.m. to noon and the second, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants also can make an optional donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a national philanthropic trust. The Beaver Creek Hiking Center is the first of its kind in North America to offer a Nordic walking program. The activity, a form of fitness walking introduced in Finland in 1997, was adapted from cross-country skiing. Hikers use modified trekking or cross-country poles so they can walk on and off pavement. Nordic Walking participants should meet at the Beaver Creek Hiking Center near the escalators in the village. Dress in comfortable walking clothing and hiking boots and bring sunscreen and water. Nordic walking is offered regularly throughout the summer for $15 per session. Vail, Colorado
