VAIL, Colorado – Volunteers will be greeting shoppers at City Market and Safeway in Vail this Friday to bag groceries for customers in free reusable bags to promote the Colorado Association of Ski Towns reusable bag challenge.

Friday’s giveaway will take place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the two grocery stores.

To date, Vail has prevented over 169,000 plastic bags from ending up in the landfill, the recycling bin or from blowing around the interstate, said Kristen Bertuglia, the town’s environmental sustainability coordinator.

Vail, along with other mountain ski towns, has been participating in the competition which ends in September. The winning ski town will earn a solar panel installation for their public school worth $10,000.

Bertuglia says Friday’s volunteer greeters will also be helping shoppers learn to record their reusable bag use at the self check-out lines, as follows:

At Safeway,

• Step up to the self checkout machine with reusable bag in hand.

• Hit Start.

• Enter Code 22011 – the machine will register your bag and deduct 5 cents off total.

• Place reusable bag in bagging area (the machine will recognize it).

• Begin scanning items and place them in your reusable bag.

At City Market,

• Step up to the self-checkout machine with reusable bag in hand.

• Hit Start.

• Place empty reusable bag in bagging area.

• The machine will ask you, “Are you using your own bag?”

• Hit “Yes” (you will receive 5 cents off your total).

• Begin scanning items and place them in your reusable bag.
