VAIL VALLEY, COLORADO “SOS Outreach, a ski and snowboard nonprofit for underprivileged kids, is providing skis for Vail students in Colorado’s Vail Valley who don’t have the equipment to get on the mountain.

This is the second year SOS is doing the “Great Ski Giveaway,” offering more than 100 pairs of brand new skis, boots and bindings donated by Salomon to middle school and high school students in Eagle and Summit counties.

Students simply have to fill out an application explaining why they want the skis, and they will get a pair to use for the season.

“The main thing is to make sure that if kids want to get up on the hill and ski, that (lack of) equipment isn’t stopping them,” said Arn Menconi, executive director of SOS Outreach. “We’re making sure that kids are able to take out skis for the season and get up on the hill.”

SOS Outreach is partnering with the Eagle County School District to spread the word about the program, but Menconi said that so far there are still many pairs available.

The skis, which are suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers, will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Boots are only available for students with boot size 5 and up.

The organization works with more than 500 students in the county through a variety of programs that focus on helping kids improve grades while teaching them to ski and snowboard.

To apply for a brand new pair of skis, download the application at or call the office at (970) 926-9292.
