Free tire tread checks are Wednesday In Vail

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

VAIL, Colorado – Free tire tread checks will be offered by the Vail Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Safeway in West Vail. The checks are voluntary and will take place on the south side of the Safeway parking lot, at 2131 N. Frontage Road.

During the check, officers will use a tire tread depth meter to help motorists determine if their tires are safe for winter driving. If a vehicle needs new tires, coupons will be distributed for discounts from participating tire stores in Eagle County. No citations will be issued.

The campaign is being initiated by public safety agencies throughout Eagle County to help reduce accidents during the winter months and year-round. While speeding and careless driving are the primary cause of accidents in Eagle County, the secondary cause is the poor condition of passenger car tires, according to statistics collected by local public safety agencies. Motor vehicles in Colorado are required to have a tire tread depth of more than 2/32 inches measured in any two tread grooves at three locations equally spaced around the circumference of the tire.

Wednesday’s tire tread check is the first in a series of courtesy checks. Motorists may also stop by the Vail and Avon police departments at any time to get their tires checked by officers. For more information, contact the Vail Police Department at 479-2200.
