Free tire tread checks in Avon, Vail
VAIL — The Vail and Avon police departments and the Colorado State Patrol will be offering free tire tread checks this month to help motorists determine if their tires are currently safe for winter driving. If new tires are needed, coupons will be available for discounts from participating tire stores in Eagle, Summit, Garfield and Pitkin counties, which are redeemable until March.
The tire checks will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Home Depot in Avon and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Safeway parking lot in West Vail.
Motor vehicles in Colorado are required to have a tire tread depth of more than 1/8 inch measured in any two tread grooves at three locations equally spaced around the circumference of the tire. During the October tread checks, officers will use a tire tread depth meter to determine if the tires are safe. The safety check will also consist of an inspection of a vehicle’s lights and windshield wipers.
This winter CDOT will be using the traction and chain laws for passenger cars, when chains are required for commercial trucks. This will require two-wheel drive passenger vehicles to have snow tires, not just all-season mud and snow-rated tires. The safety checks will assist citizens in determining the type of tires they have on their vehicles. Additional vehicle safety checks are available from the Vail and Avon police departments between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the stations, where the discount coupons will be available for distribution, as well. The Colorado State Patrol is also assisting with the awareness campaign.
