Friday Aug. 31 is ‘Tony Gulizia Day’

VAIL – The Board of Eagle County Commissioners, along with the Vail Town Council, has announced that Friday is “Tony Gulizia Day” in honor of the local jazz performer and educator.

Tony Gulizia will be honored at a pre-concert reception at opening night of the Vail Jazz Festival on Friday at the Vail Cascade Resort & Spa beginning at 7 p.m. The reception will be followed by the opening night concert, featuring Tony Gulizia and Friends, Taylor Eigsti Trio and Clayton Brothers Quintet with Brandon Lee on Trumpet beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets to the opening night festivities are $55 per person, which includes the pre-concert reception.

Tony Gulizia and his family moved to the Vail Valley from Omaha, NE in 1992 and Tony promptly set up camp as one of the hardest working performers in the valley. He can be seen seven nights a week at the Grouse Mountain Grill in Beaver Creek, afternoons at the Cascade Resort & Spa, along with Sunday nights at Restaurant Kelly Liken and weekends at the Farmer’s Markets in Vail and Minturn. In addition to his performance schedule, Tony has taught middle school band at the Eagle County Charter Academy for 12 years and leads the Vail Jazz Goes to School program for the Vail Jazz Foundation.Jazz Goes to School brings America’s original music, jazz, into every elementary school classroom in Eagle County four times each year. By educating over 1,000 students through this program, Gulizia has made music lovers out of the county’s youngsters. Now entering its 10th year, Jazz Goes to School is a model for other communities.

In addition to his work in Eagle County, Gulizia still finds a way to make his mark in his home state of Nebraska. In 1997, he received the Governor’s Award for Excellence and has worked for the Nebraska Arts Council and Mid American Arts Alliance presenting “Artists in School” Residences. To date, he and his drummer brother Joey have completed 350 residencies since 1980.Tony’s radio show, “Jazz at its Peak” airs every Sunday on KZYR the Zephyr with over 100 shows under his belt.
