Friends raising funds for injured Vail man
Special to the Vail Daily
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado –Longtime Vail resident Kevin “Schmitty” Schmitt was badly injured while volunteering at Nastar Racing Course earlier this month, sustaining injuries that will not only see him facing months of rehabilitation, but insurmountable medical costs.
Schmitt, a Red Lion employee and familiar face around Vail Village, caught an edge on his snowboard while checking the scoreboard and careered into a fence, which flung him into a wooden post, breaking his femur clean in half. Schmitt is facing six to 12 months off work with extensive rehabilitation.
In typical Vail Valley fashion, the community has quickly united to raise funds to assist with Schmitt’s medical bills. A benefit will be held at 7 p.m., Monday at the Altitude Bar at the Evergreen Lodge.
The evening, which will be hosted by Red Lion personality Kevin “Sully” Sullivan, will not only be a huge party celebrating the Vail community, but will also serve to raise funds for Schmitt’s medical bills, with raffle prizes being donated by businesses from the local area.
Prizes include restaurant and bar vouchers from Ocotillo Bar and Grill at the Vail Mountain Marriott Resort and Spa, Sweet Basil, Russell’s, The Red Lion, The Sandbar, The West Side Cafe and Market, plus many, many more.
Coors has donated two limited edition Never Summer snowboards, one pair of Liberty Skis and a Patagonia women’s jacket. Other great prizes include an autographed picture of Victoria’s Secret supermodel Miranda Kerr, a one-of-a-kind hand-crafted and stitched antique teddy bear valued at $300, an Estee Lauder gift basket valued at $600, Jurlique skin care to the value of $300 and Maybelline New York Cosmetics valued at over $300.
West One Hair and Beauty Salon in Eagle-Vail has also generously donated prizes. There will also be clothing prizes to be won, with newly opened Minturn fashion boutique, Jayded, donating a fashion voucher to the value of $25.
Most coveted of all raffle prizes will be one week’s accommodation for two in a home in Lake Arenal in Costa Rica.
