From Battle Mountain to Broadway
The Battle Mountain High School dance team is hoping to twirl its way to (and through) New York.
The team of young ladies is headed to New York in the spring along with coach Kathy Thomason. Last week, they held a fundraising dinner at Balata in Singletree. The dancers performed server duties to the full restaurant, with all tips given to them going toward their trip, to the National Dance Championships for high school dance teams.
Last year, they came in 12th in their division at a competition in Orlando. The gold medal is not out of sight; the year before, the team came in first place.
“If we’re going to work this hard to raise money, I’d like the girls to have the cultural and dance experience of New York,” said Thomason.
Brian Hester, principal of Battle Mountain High School, has a close dance connection in The Big Apple, on which Thomason is hoping to capitalize. His cousin is a Rockette, and she’s hopeful the connection might pull in a special experience for the dancers.
“The girls can also take Broadway dance classes from people like Savion Glover,” referring the renowned tap dancer and choreographer, Thomason added. Her daughter, Gabrielle, is on the dance team, and the experience left an indelible mark on older daughter, Sarah. She’s majoring at dance at Loyola University.
“The girls are all excellent turners, and we have lots of new freshmen,” she added. “They all get along and work together.”
Daughter and dance team member Gabby Thomason agreed.
“It’s a lot fun,” she said. “We’re all like sisters.”
