Yoga Jam, a fundraiser for Africa Yoga Project, will take place Thursday at the Eagle-Vail Pavilion from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The suggested donation is $15.

Africa Yoga Project uses the transformative power of yoga to empower communities and change lives. It employs 42 Baptiste trained yoga instructors to teach more than 200 classes a week. A majority of the students and teachers in Kenya are between the ages of 16 and 30, and come from impoverished backgrounds in Nairobi, Kenya. Most live on $2 a day and have been affected by HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa.

“Africa Yoga Project has not only brought jobs to the community, but it has provided unity, peace and possibility where there wasn’t. Yoga has given the people a sense of hope,” says Rachel DeLong. “They are teaching to 5,000 people per week now and the numbers are rising.”

DeLong will be heading to Kenya at the end of July for Seva Safari. She made a pledge to raise $5,000 for this service trip where she will witness AYP’s work first hand and go to the Masai village of the Amboseli to build a classroom.

“I am so inspired and grateful for the generosity of our community. This will be my fifth Yoga Jam Event and I am very close to meeting my goal. It just shows the power of what’s possible when we come together and generate abundance by giving.”
