Gas leak closes four schools Friday

EDWARDS — A gas leak in Edwards gave students in four schools an unexpected day off Friday.
Classes were canceled Friday at the Eagle County Charter Academy, June Creek Elementary School, Berry Creek Middle School and Red Canyon High School.
A gas leak was reported in the area at 6:20 a.m., originating from a high pressure facility on Miller Ranch Road, said Tracy LeClair, public information officer with the Eagle River Fire Protection District.
Roads in the area and Xcel Energy and Source Gas were notified, LeClair said.
By 8:30 a.m. the leak was contained, and by 8:45 a.m. the roads were reopened.

The schools in the area were closed, and the kids who were already on buses were diverted to Battle Mountain High School, which was open Friday. Their parents were directed to pick them up there, said Tammy Schiff, the school district’s communications director.
Responding agencies included the Eagle River Fire Protection District, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle County Paramedic Services, Vail Public Safely Communication Center, Eagle County School District, Xcel Energy and Source Gas.
