EDWARDS, Colorado – Construction crews installing an Xcel Energy pipeline along U.S. Highway 6 near Arrowhead cut a gas main around 10 a.m. Saturday, forcing emergency crews to close Highway 6 from Avon to Edwards for about 31⁄2 hours.

Eagle River Fire Protection District Chief Charlie Moore said it was likely a four-inch gas main that was cut.

The gas leak caused emergency crews to evacuate several homes in Arrowhead. Homeowners who were home were evacuated to the Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek.

The road reopened around 1:30 p.m.

“The gas leak has been contained,” Moore said. “The major issue was stopping the gas, which took about two hours.”
