Gifted Team offers science workshop in Vail Valley
VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – The Gifted Education Team of Eagle County is offering a workshop for elementary-aged children in the Vail Valley called “Science in the Hands of Kids” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Edwards Elementary School. The free interactive workshop will be presented by John McConnell of the Western Math & Science Center in Grand Junction. Science students and Hispanic mentors from Battle Mountain High School will assist and mentor the younger children.”Kids go crazy over Mr. McConnell’s experiments,” says Anne Dunlevie, the Gifted Education Team’s president. “It’s thrilling for them to build and participate in science experiments using ordinary materials that produce extra-ordinary results.”Space for the workshop is limited. To RSVP, contact Dunlevie at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 970-376 5232.While McConnell is in Eagle County next week, some fourth graders will get to see him at school. He’ll be working at Red Hill and Edwards elementaries, visiting seven fourth-grade classrooms over a three-day period. Part of McConnell’s Science program includes training teachers to incorporate hands-on activities that tie in with their curriculum. “The earlier we engage our students in the sciences the better,” says McConnell, a retired particle physicist.Any schools or teachers interested in scheduling a training session may contact McConnell directly through the Western Math & Science Center’s Web site, http://www.sithok.org, or contact Dunlevie.
