Giving more than you recieve

Michael NortonVail, CO, Colorado

You can have everything in life that you want, just as long as you help enough other people get what they want Zig ZiglarI have had the privilege and honor of serving as president of the Zig Ziglar Corporation and the quote above means more to Zig than just something he says it is a way of life for him. Its a way of life that I learned through his mentorship and a practical philosophy that has served me equally as well in both my personal and my professional life. Consistent with this belief, my initial intent and plan as the new Executive Director for the Vail Chamber & Business Association was designed around what I could give back to the Vail merchant community by way of my knowledge and experience. My goals and objectives included meetings with the business owners, managers, and staff members while also spending time getting to know the folks at Vail Resorts and the town of Vail a little bit better and to create forums where I could share ideas. Participation in town meetings, planning sessions, board meetings and advisory meetings were also included in my plan and part of my responsibility. So, although I planned on being the giver, I have found myself on the receiving end of your gifts. Every day since I have started, I have walked through town, meeting new folks. The community has been wonderfully warm and welcoming and I cant tell you how much I appreciate your smiles, warm handshakes, and insightful ideas and suggestions as I visit you in your shops. It is with an attitude of gratitude that I thank you for these gifts. It is easy sometimes to look for the bad and glorify the problems within our community and really in society as a whole. Its easy because of the economy, the price of gas, the never ending mud-slinging that comes with a presidential election year, our own local issues, etc., etc. However, there are just some people who go looking for the bad like there was a reward for it. Its so much better and so much more fun to be a good finder. As we look for the good and for ways to create opportunity, The Vail Chamber & Business Association is focused on three primary functions to better serve the merchant community. Our mission is founded in advocacy, communication, and economic development. Additionally, we are really excited about some upcoming events we are supporting, including a powerful one day leadership and customer service event facilitated by Disney on Sept. 22. The Turn It Up! program is also undergoing a change and will now be delivered online so our participants can benefit from the program in a self-paced format. Look for announcements about this in the near future. This is the time of year when the chamber is looking to the merchants to renew their membership or begin a membership in our organization. To renew your membership or join for the first time, or if you have questions about the Disney Institute or the Turn It Up! program, contact us at info@vailchamber.org or call 970-477-0075. Thank you in advance for the opportunity to serve you in the future and thank you again for your gift of welcoming me to the community and for your valued feedback. If we all continue to give more, I am confident that we will all receive more. Michael Norton is executive director of the Vail Chamber & Business Association.
