Glenwood Canyon tunnel to close
Vail CO, Colorado
GLENWOOD CANYON ” A crack in the eastbound Interstate 70 tunnel at Hanging Lake has gotten bad enough that it will close for repairs Friday night, the Colorado Department of Transportation said Friday.
The westbound tunnel has been inspected and is safe, the agency said.
“We believe the tunnel is stable and don’t anticipate a structural failure, however, we’re going to err on the side of caution and make the necessary repairs to be certain there is no risk to motorists before we reopen the tunnel to traffic,” said Russ George, director of the transportation department.
The tunnel will be closed indefinitely. Motorists will be re-routed into the westbound lanes, where traffic will flow in one lane in each direction. Loads over 12-feet wide will be restricted from traveling through the westbound tunnel.
