Gondola tower collapses at Whistler
WHISTLER, British Columbia ” A gondola tower has collapsed at the ski resort in Whistler, trapping passengers inside two gondolas on the mountain.
Police say there were no serious injuries in the accident about 2:30 p.m. local time Tuesday, but two people were taken to the hospital.
Sgt. Steve Wright of Whistler Royal Canadian Mounted Police says the gondolas didn’t fall, they remain on the cables with passengers inside. The accident took place near Fitzsimmons Creek, between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains.
Firefighters are on the scene and trying to reach the gondolas and evacuate the passengers. Police say the cause of the accident is unknown.
Whistler and Vancouver are hosting the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
