Gore Lake, Cougar Ridge fires extinguished
The fire proved especially difficult for the six smokejumpers dispatched to extinguish it.
“It was just a messy fire,” said Interagency Fire Officer Phil Bowden. “It had lots of hot spots and burned underneath some rocks in the duff.”
Lightning two weeks ago is blamed for starting the fire five miles north of Vail Pass.
A second fire, on Cougar Ridge overlooking the “Minturn Mile” skiers use to exit the west side of Vail Mountain, was extinguished Sunday, Bowden said. That fire, too, was started by lightning two weeks ago.
No fires were started during the busy holiday weekend, Bowden said, but one campfire was spotted near Piney Lake.
“Everybody and their brother called that one in,” he said.
Colorado has a statewide fire ban. Campers had extinguished the fire and left before authorities arrived, Bowden said.
