Government Tracker: Avon may protest part of travel plan
Board: Avon Town Council, June 14 regular meeting.
Present: Buz Reynolds, Chris Evans, Rich Carroll, Amy Phillips, Dave Dantas, Todd Goulding.
Issue: The U.S. Forest Service’s travel management plan.
What they talked about: Possible effects the plan might have on access to national forest land north of town. Residents were particularly concerned about the plan’s proposal to close Forest Road 779.1. That closure would eliminate one of the two access points from town.
“It seems a crime to shut that down,” resident Tab Bonidy said. “I bought with that access in mind.”
Council members asked town staff to evaluate filing a protest to the plan based only on the closure of that road, looking at specific mistakes that might have been made in drafting the plan.
What’s next? Mayor Rich Carroll acknowleged that time is tight for filing a protest, but suggested the town look into some sort of community effort to get the trail re-opened if the protest fails.
