Government Tracker: County seeks grant for an airport interchange

Vail, CO Colorado

The issue: The Eagle County Regional Airport/Interstate 70 interchange proposal.

Person they talked to: Peter Runyon, Eagle County commissioner.

What they talked about: Runyon asked the town of Vail for a letter of support for the federal grant application for funding for an interchange between the airport and Interstate 70.

The Vail Town Council has previously denied supporting such a letter, citing in 2009 that other transportation needs are more important than a $65 million interchange that would shave a few minutes off travel times.

This time, however, the council agreed the opportunity for securing the grant, which would be a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, should be explored. The county has applied for the grant twice before and has been denied. Runyon said he can’t guarantee the town’s letter of support would have secured a previous grant application but that broad-based community support is needed for any hope for success for such applications.
