Watch out, California: Red Canyon High School senior Lucas Vasquez is on his way west to make an impression.

After graduation in May, Vasquez will be starting classes at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising located on four campuses in the Los Angeles/San Diego area. The institute is an internationally recognized college that prepares students for leadership in the global industries of fashion, visual arts, interior design and entertainment.

The campuses are strategically located in the centers of California’s top three industries, which are fashion, entertainment and manufacturing. Study tours in New York, Europe and Asia are also available to students. The institute offers flexible scheduling, which is exactly what Vasquez is accustomed to graduating from Red Canyon High School.

“Red Canyon isn’t a normal high school. I really like the small classes,” says Vasquez, who adds that he will miss the scenery and mountains that now surround him.

Vasquez says he was inspired to go into fashion by the late Gianni Versace. Versace was tragically gunned down in his South Beach home in Miami, Fla. almost eight years ago. Versace is known and loved internationally for his unique fashions. Some who have known Vasquez say he will be internationally known some day, as well.

“I’m absolutely certain that some day, we’re going to hear an actress on the ‘red carpet’ talking about her dress being designed by Lucas Vasquez,” says Red Canyon High School Principal Wade Hill. Hill says he is amazed by how detailed Vasquez’ drawings are. “His passion for design and his true artistic talent are remarkable.”

“Always go to college,” is Vasquez’ advice for younger students. Vasquez says the best advice he received from his parents was to follow his heart and not give up.
