Gravity, dead tree zap electric power

Cliff Thompson

For the second time in 24 hours a power outage hit portions of eastern Eagle County late Tuesday night.

The first occurred Tuesday afternoon when maintenance workers at an electrical substation in Wolcott inadvertently tripped a circuit breaker.

The second, which affected parts of Minturn and West Vail and lasted nearly two hours, occurred when a dead tree fell on an electrical line east of Battle Mountain High School, said Dick Stratton, Vail district manager for Holy Cross Energy.

He said a three-person crew hiked through waist-deep snow to clear the line.

It was raining a the time the tree fell. Some residents also reported heavy wind gusts.
