Great Start program begins Monday

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

VAIL, Colorado – The Vail Valley’s pre-kindergarten aged children will embark on their educational journey Monday as the Vail Valley Foundation’s new “Great Start” pre-kindergarten readiness program is set to officially launch in a trio of the community’s schools.

Introduced in May and run in conjunction with the Eagle County School District, the Great Start program is built upon the idea that a child’s first step to their educational future actually comes from being socially prepared to enter kindergarten. The new program will utilize teachers and classrooms at Avon Elementary School, Gypsum Elementary School and June Creek Elementary School for a seven-week summer semester that will run from June 20 through Aug. 5.

Sessions will run four days per week and can accommodate a total of 195 students, with a target of 15 children per classroom and a one-to-eight teacher-student ratio. Currently, over 110 children are enrolled for the inaugural Great Start session.
