GREG DIAZ, Trumpet
A native of Los Angeles, Greg is entering his junior year at Los Angeles County High School of the Arts (LACHSA) which he began attending in 2002. He began playing trumpet in the sixth grade and while attending middle school played in the Cerritos Community College Wind Ensemble, its Big Band and eventually its Jazz Combo. He is a member of the LACHSA Big Band and Jazz Combo and also plays in a number of groups outside of school.
Greg has won awards for his solos while playing with both LACHSA bands at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition and the Reno Jazz Festival. He has also been named best soloist at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival High School Competition.
His combo received first place at the Berklee competition playing two of his compositions and this year he was named a member of the Grammy High School All-Star Band. Greg’s favorite trumpeters are Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw and Booker Little.
One of his goals for the Workshop is to improve his interaction with the rhythm section.
