Greyboy Allstars, Funky Meters and others jam for free at Copper

Daily Staff Writer

Three of Colorado’s finest down-home gospel acts glorify Copper Mountain on Saturday and Sunday.

Denver’s The Heavenly Echoes headline the weekend’s music; the group features Madame Andrews. Denver’s “Gospel Queen” and winner of Westword’s Best Female Vocalist honor, Andrews is a living legend among Colorado’s gospel performers. She is the recipient of numerous gospel music awards, and the host of KGNU’s Gospel Chime program.

Andrews and her Heavenly Echoes will be joined each day by a gospel act – the 8-piece Gospel Airs, and the Gospel Sons quartet.

Sunsation’s final weekend includes some of the nation’s best funk, jazz and rock acts. Funk pioneers the Funky Meters – with legendary founder, Art Neville – bring their unique brand of New Orleans flavored music to Copper on Saturday, April 17. Buckner Funken Jazz and local favorites Yo, Flaco! round out the afternoon’s entertainment.

Eclectic jazz artists the Greyboy Allstars – featuring Karl Denson and Robert Walter – will headline the weekend. The Vail Valley’s premier funk-rock act, Little Hercules, will open the show.

The music happens outdoors in Burning Stones Plaza, all performances are free to the public.

The final day of Sunsation ends with the annual Eenie Weenie Bikini Contest. Relocated to the East Village, this year’s bikini contest features men and women in their most creative costumes, competing for prizes.
