Grind, jib and bonk at 2017 CMC Cloud City Rail Jam in Leadville March 25
You’ve spent all season in the terrain park. Now’s the time to win some cash for all that hard work.
On March 25, the Cloud City Rail Jam returns for a 13th season of jibbing, grinding, sliding, spinning and generally kicking a** at the Colorado Mountain College-Leadville’s backyard terrain park.
The Cloud City Rail Jam is an all-ages event with separate divisions for men and women (ages 13 and older), plus a grom division (ages 12 and younger). Awards go to the best overall male and female competitor in each discipline for both skiing and snowboarding. Prizes for this year’s event include snowboards, skis, gear and more. Two of the top prizes are custom snowboards designed and built by students in the ski business program at CMC-Steamboat Springs. More sponsors and prizes are being added daily before the event, so stay tuned to the Facebook event page for official updates.
students are responsible
The annual rail jam at CMC-Leadville is organized and overseen entirely by the ski area operations and event management class. Students are responsible for all event details, from designing and building the features to obtaining sponsorships and prizes. The jam serves as a final project for the events management class, and all students have been working on it since January.
“I’m most excited about designing and building the park features,” says Dan Williams, a ski area operations student originally from Port Angeles, Washington. “I take advantage of every opportunity I have to get in a snowcat and groom or build. Plus, I love riding and testing out the features. We’re lucky to have an on-campus backyard terrain park behind our dorm.”
Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m. at the Leadville campus. Cost is $10 and includes a jersey and lunch for the first 30 competitors. Competitors under 18 years of age will need a parent or guardian signature to participate, and helmets are required for all.
