Gross charged with first-degree murder
EAGLE ” Charles Anthony Gross was officially charged Monday with first-degree murder with extreme indifference in the killing of 35-year-old Maria Madrid of Gypsum.
Protesters were on hand to make sure Gross was adequately charged, said Mara Palma, who took part in the demonstration.
“We want to be treated equally in court,” Palma said. “We want people to know you can’t kill one of us and there won’t be consequences.”
District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said supporters have shown up en masse to support Madrid. “This has really affected the community. It has hit hard,” he said.
Gross, 55, was also charged with two counts of attempted murder and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
Also shot was Mardrid’s husband, Eliseo Madrid, who has told investigators his family was preparing to leave a campsite on Coffee Pot Road when a man accused them of leaving trash.
Madrid said the man fired a handgun at the family’s car as they left the site.
