Groups upset by budget cuts rally at Denver Capitol

DENVER – People upset by the latest round of budget cuts in Colorado are rallying at the state Capitol.

The Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute is one of the groups participating in the Tuesday event. Senior fiscal analyst Carol Hedges says lawmakers have focused too much on cutting state services. She says they should come back for a special session this fall and consider eliminating tax credits and exemptions to help reverse the cuts.

About $320 million in budget cuts ordered by Gov. Bill Ritter took effect last week.

They include eliminating a school safety officer to evaluate evacuation plans and eliminating a DNA lab technician, even though the state has a backlog of 2,700 samples for homicides, sex assaults and other crimes.
