Gym dedicated to Coach Gallegos
MINTURN – Ben Gallegos has put in 28 great years at Minturn Middle School, where the popular teacher and coach was recognized by the community during a gymnasium dedication ceremony last Thursday. The gym will be named after Gallegos and students – past and present – were thrilled and proud of that fact.Gallegos graduated from Adams State College in Alamosa in 1977 with a masters in secondary education. He attended the college on a baseball scholarship and was hired immediately after graduation by Minturn Middle School.
Gallegos has been at the current school since day one, and has also served as the athletics director for the school, along with performing additional coaching duties at Battle Mountain High School. Gallegos has been married to Patty for 28 years. Their daughter, Elizabeth, works as an engineer for Lockheed Martin in Denver. The couple reside in Maloit Park, where they have lived for the past 26 years. Past student Bryan Gustafson summed up the thoughts of many. “Ben Gallegos is the nicest guy and the best coach in Eagle County,” Gustafson said. “He’s not just a teacher, but a friend,” added Rachel Edwards. “He cares about everyone and liked to pick on us.”
“His energy woke everyone up in the morning,” Anna Sanchez said. Joe Webb remembers Gallegos as a hard, but fair coach. “His love for basketball was unmeasurable,” Webb said. Minturn teacher Ruth Johnson said Gallegos was one of the most dedicated teachers she has ever known. “I always told him he had the growl of a grizzly but was really just a big teddy bear,” Johnson said. “Ben is a genuine person with a big heart. He was a role model to students and co-workers.”
