Gypsum school’s new principal
Vail, CO Colorado
GYPSUM ” Teresa Bandel-Schott is the new principal at Red Hill Elementary School, replacing two-year principal Anthony Barela, who resigned at the end of the 2007-2008 school year.
Bandel-Schott has been the principal of Shelledy Elementary School in Grand Junction for the past three years, and was assistant principal for three years before that.
She had also been the special education coordinator for Mesa County Valley School District and worked with gifted and talented elementary and preschool students.
She has a master’s degree in special education with a concentration in early childhood, a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies and is completing her Ph.D. in educational leadership.
“I am really excited to be a part of Eagle County Schools,” Bandel-Schott said. “It seems ECS is always ahead of the game and is constantly doing what is right for kids. It takes the rest of the bigger school districts at least a year to catch up.”
Given that Red Hill has experienced rapid growth through the past few years and is now at capacity, Bandel-Schott believes she fits in perfectly with her three years of experience as a principal at Shelledy.
“It was the only elementary school in Fruita until a year ago, so I have been through quick expansion rate situations of students in the past,” Bandel-Schott said.
The new principal wants to continue focusing on elementary reading and she has had experience with the new reading curriculum, Literacy By Design, that the school district has adopted.
For now, she is looking for a place to live while getting ready to make the move from Grand Junction. She says she is looking forward to spending time camping with her family. Her husband loves to hunt and fish and her two teenage daughters share their parents’ love for the outdoors.
“We believe her ability to build relationships coupled with her attitude of doing whatever it takes for kids makes her a great match for RHES and our district as a whole,” said Heather Eberts, executive director of elementary education.
