Gypsum Town Council welcomes newcomers

GYPSUM — The Town Council will have two new members at its next meeting.

Marisa Sato and Chris Huffman earned the most votes in Tuesday’s municipal election, with 212 and 203 votes, respectively. They’ll be serving their first terms on council. Longtime incumbent Tom Edwards earned the third available seat with 184 votes. Fellow incumbent Beric Christiansen finished fourth, with 180 votes.

The vote totals are preliminary and won’t be certified for several days, and a handful of late-arriving ballots from voters in the military have yet to be counted.

“I’m just excited to be further involved in the community and help make decisions,” Sato said, adding that she doesn’t have an agenda for the town’s future.

Tom Edwards was first appointed to fill a vacancy on the council nearly 20 years ago and has been re-elected several times. Edwards said he didn’t have an agenda when he was appointed and still doesn’t, although there are some things he wants to see the town accomplish, including completing a master plan to guide future development.

The town has completed a recreation center, its sports fields and the community amphitheater during Edwards’ tenure.

“We have some great things going, and I’d like to see a few more,” he said.

Huffman said he also wants to see the master plan completed, as well as a traffic study.

“I want to make sure our infrastructure stays ahead of our growth,” Huffman said. “Mostly I’m looking forward to working with the city and keeping it working as well as it has been in the past.”
