BEAVER CREEK, Colorado ” The Beehive is back.

The Vilar Performing Arts Center continues its Broadway lineup on Friday, Jan. 4 with a full-scale production of the hit musical “Hairspray.”

“Irresistible! If life were everything it should be, it would be more like ‘Hairspray'” raved The New York Times. “A great big fat gorgeous hit” said The New York Post.

It’s 1962 ” the ’50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion: to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show” and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.

But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a television show without denting her “do?” Only in “Hairspray” ” welcome to the ’60s.

The musical features an original score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Their songs take Tracy from the soundstage of a 60’s-style dance show to the streets of Baltimore to a downtown rhythm and blues record shop.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy Award, “Hairspray” has taken Broadway by storm. Based on the 1988 John Waters movie of the same name, “Hairspray” has played over 2,000 shows on Broadway, enjoyed critically-acclaimed national tours and was adapted into a 2007 motion picture starring John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken.

Now the hit musical takes the stage in Beaver Creek for a single night. The Vilar Performing Arts Center has greatly expanded its Broadway offerings for their 10th anniversary season, with an exceptional performance of “The Producers” opening the series in November and the timeless Andrew Lloyd Weber/Tim Rice collaboration “Jesus Christ Superstar” coming to the stage on Jan. 18 and 19.

Tickets for “Hairspray” are sold out. Please call the Vilar Center Box Office at 845-TIXS to be added to the wait list.
