Hanging Lake trail to be closed from May until August
GLENWOOD CANYON – The popular Hanging Lake Trail and boardwalk in Glenwood Canyon will be closed from May 1 to approximately Aug. 1 for reconstruction and maintenance. The Hanging Lake Trail is one of the most popular recreation attractions along the I-70 corridor with over 80,000 visitors annually. The Hanging Lake boardwalk will be replaced. Since it was built in 1992, about one million visitors have hiked across it. Also, sections of the pipe handrail on the upper trail will be repaired or replaced, debris flow control structures will be installed and heavily damaged sections of the trail will be reconstructed.Helicopters will be used to remove debris and bring construction materials to the trail. The Hanging Lake Rest Area will be closed for the duration of the project. The Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail will remain open with some short closures while helicopter operations are underway. The reconstruction and restoration projects on the lower sections of the Hanging Lake Trail will be carried out by two volunteer organizations, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado and the Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers.
