Hard-to-categorize artist will play in Beaver Creek
Editors note: Directors Corner is a weekly column where Kris Sabel, who is in charge of cultural programming for the Vail Valley Foundation, gives his expert take on shows not to be missed. The Vilar Performing Arts Center winter season is in full swing! The concert series begins with a bang as two of todays finest singer/songwriters take the stage. On Dec. 15 Marc Cohn returns with his band to support his new album, Join The Parade. If you havent heard the album you definitely need to check it out! This will be an incredible concert. But to start things off, Jackie Greene will be performing with his band tomorrow night in what is sure to be a memorable evening. If you dont know Jackie Greene and his music, you are in for a treat. If you had the pleasure of seeing him live at the Vilar a few years ago, you know what a special artist this young man is.If you are unfamiliar with Greene, please dont let that deter you from attending on Saturday night. He is the real deal! As a musician, he is equally comfortable on the guitar, piano, harmonica and Hammond B 3 organ. As a singer, he has a soulful voice that is big and casually seductive. As a songwriter, he is insightful, poetic and prolific. He seems to be releasing a new album about every 4 to 6 months and his fans cant get enough.
If you must categorize his style, Id call it acoustic-folksy blues with a rock n roll heart that is both cutting edge and timeless. He cites influences including The Rolling Stones, The Band, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. If you need name-dropping to understand his talent, consider this: he has toured with Susan Tedeschi, B.B. King (who incidentally asked him to become his full-time keyboard player), Huey Lewis, John Hiatt, George Thorogood, Taj Mahal, Lyle Lovett, Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys, Jewel, Buddy Guy, Mark Knopfler and Willie Nelson. He just completed a Tour with Phil Lesh and Friends.Lesh (the bassist for the Grateful Dead) has become one of Greenes biggest fans. On the recent tour, Jackie not only played piano and guitar, but he was the lead singer. His vocal range perfectly matched that of Jerry Garcia, allowing the group to preserve the Grateful Deads songs with accuracy. Critics praised Greenes role in the group as bluesy cool, haunting and hypnotizing. Greene has also played in many high profile festivals across the country, including the Rhythm & Roots Festival, Newport Jazz and Folk Festival, Bonnaroo, South by Southwest and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Our winter season is filled with artists of great stature who you know and love. But we are very pleased to also present current artists who today are making the music of tomorrow. I encourage you to be a part of this special presentation I promise, youll be an instant Jackie Greene fan, and will enjoy an unforgettable evening at the Vilar Center.I hope to see you on Saturday night!
