EDWARDS ” An Ali Hasan campaign sign was marred with swastikas and dollars signs sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning in Edwards.

“Liar” and “wanker” were also written on the sign positioned at the corner of Edwards Village Boulevard and U.S. Highway 6. The vandalized sign was reported by a Vail Valley resident early Saturday, said Eagle County Sheriff Deputy Karen Waddell.

Waddell was unable to find any other defaced Hasan signs in the area.

“I don’t think it was a personal vendetta,” Waddell said. “It just looked like somebody had some time on their hands.”

Hasan, a Beaver Creek Republican, is running against Democratic state Rep. Christine Scanlan for the state House District 56 seat.

Waddell said she doesn’t consider the incident a targeted one because the sign was in a heavily traveled area.

“I don’t think it was a political statement,” she said. “To my knowledge, this is the first one.”

Hasan’s campaign manager Kaye Ferry has heard of signs being vandalized around the county, but not in this way, she said.

“We’ve been lucky,” she said. “I think this is the kind of stuff that happens when there are highly contested elections happening.”

The Hasan sign is about 5-feet long 3-feet tall ” the largest on the Edwards corner ” and was propped up by two wooden posts, Waddell said.

Unless anyone saw anything, it will be difficult to track down whoever is responsible for the vandalism, said Waddell.

Anyone caught defacing a campaign sign could be charged with criminal mischief or criminal tampering ” both misdemeanors and arrestable offenses, Waddell said.

Residents can anonymously report any suspicious activity by calling Eagle County Crime Stoppers at 970-328-7007.
