Haute Alpine Couture column: Spreading holiday cheer
Haute Alpine Couture
Your holiday social calendar is filling up with visits from ski bums who were re-routed to Wall Street, family members equipped with ugly Christmas sweaters and, of course, our favorite kind of holiday plan, parties! Bring on your swanky, merry attire and kick up your (red-soled) heels, Alpine Couturists, because the season of gifts and giving has arrived.
DRESS IT UP!
In true fashionista style, the holiday season is not only about the gifts you give, but the ones you receive. With a rag trade “Devil Wears Prada” flair, your holiday philosophy du jour is, of course, “one for me, one for you.” A small (or grande!) bauble can turn your Little Black Dress into a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” catwalk through Vail Village. Kristen Calarco Designs wow’d us with her fall jewelry intros, but for holiday shine we are gushing over the crimson-hued Ruby CZ Vermeil Earrings ($168, Sols in Vail).
The most intriguing aspect of donning any piece of jewelry featuring jasper is the stone’s unique color patterns and that its ancient, Biblical roots bring a certain mystique to whomever wears it. So, when Kristin Calarco Designs unwrapped the Jasper & Hammered Sterling Silver Necklace ($148, Sols in Vail) for us to have a sneak peek, the piece’s beauty gave our fashionista radar a super-holiday-pick-me-up.
As with a radiant trinket, your holiday party style should be color-apropos for the season. So, ditch your LBD (sorry Goth die-hards!) and replace it with a flushed merry making red — one that will surely cause your beau to blush under the mistletoe. The sheer name alone of Erin Fetherston’s Candy skirt ($225, Blitz) conjures up visions of candy canes and holiday peppermint bark. The red and cream skirt paired with the matching Candy Top ($185, Blitz) feature a jacquard champagne and ruby petite fleur pattern. The best part about this flutter skirt and sleeveless cropped top combo? It’s reversible! One side features the creamy cava shade and the other your morning after Bloody Mary. Two holiday shindigs in one outfit!
If your holiday soiree includes a chi-chi-attired event, then the exquisite ML Monique Lhuillier Sleeveless Beaded High-Low Gown ($698, Blitz) is your par-tay frock. Show off smooth moves on the dance floor in this high/low gown featuring delicate beading at the waistline, which gives your silhouette a sleek, red carpet style. Maybe your Cranberry Martini needs a sprinkle of holiday glitter and the dazzling Collective Jeune Beading Shift Dress ($350, Perch) should do the trick. In this dress, you will twinkle like holiday lights all night long with top to bottom sequin details.
If part of your personal 25 Days of Christmas includes skiing on neighboring slopes (gasp!), then it is a total must that you check out the Leota Susan in French Dot Dress ($245, The Flying Crane) in Frisco. Paired with flats, heels or mile-high boots, this playful, dotted dress is perfect for going from office to holiday cocktail hour.
POM POMS TO SPARKLE SWEATERS
Let’s face it, what you wear on your head during the holidays is almost as important as what’s underneath your coat. Pom poms made a big splash on the fall/winter runways and were appropriately coined as luxuriously-cozy and uber-feminine. Both the Mischa Lampert Fur Pom Pom Hat ($195, Perch) and the Colorado-made Lauren Wood Dunton XL Pom Pom Hat ($205, Perch) give the classic winter chapeau a new, supersized pom — the epitome of mountain lux.
When your fashionista instincts tap into your effervescent style, pull on the shimmering V-neck Kesler Sparkle Sweater by BB DAKOTA ($94, Kiwi Boutique). This creamy, champagne-colored sweater is perfect for your casual holiday get-together and has a super-trendy slit on the back for extra sass as you are headed to the bar for another eggnog.
For some of us couture transplants, Vail’s chilly temps are a shock to the system when they arrive. Layer up your spur-of-the-moment holiday ensemble with the richly-hued Brenda Multi Jacket from JACK by BB DAKOTA ($98, Kiwi Boutique). This jacket looks fabulous with your favorite jeans and thigh-high boots.
POOF THE PUP
Your furry friend deserves some canine coiffing during the holidays, too. Doggie Style is offering Holiday Grooms ($25-$75), which features a full regular grooming using a special holiday-scented organic Holly Berry shampoo.
:: STOCKING STUFFERS
With 2015 around the corner, stuff your favorite peeps’ stockings with signature Colorado-wear from Aksels. Easy stuffers include the warm and soft Aksels CO Beanies ($20, Rouge Boutique), signature Aksels CO Hats ($24, Rouge Boutique) and mega-comfy Aksels CO Socks ($12, Rouge Boutique). If these are not quite the sophisticated-wear some of your folks are accustomed to, then slip in a pair of Stance Boot Socks ($22, Perch). For your beautinistas, pack that stocking with flavorful and nourishing beauty products such as Honey House Naturals Lip Balm ($5, Rouge Boutique), Honey House Naturals Bar Lotion ($8/$12, Rouge Boutique) and products from the heavenly-scented Kai brand — Kai Body Lotion ($37, Perch), Kai Body Buffer ($40, Perch), Kai Home Reed Diffuser ($18, Perch) and signature Kai Perfume ($76, Perch).
