Helicopters can drop skiers in Utah forests
SALT LAKE CITY ” A federal appeals court has upheld a ruling that allows helicopters to drop backcountry skiers in two Utah national forests.
The court turned aside an appeal by two groups that claimed the U.S. Forest Service failed to take a hard look at the impact of skiers in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons.
Wasatch Powderbird Guides operates from the Snowbird resort. Its permit was renewed in 2005.
In 2006, a federal judge in Salt Lake City rejected a challenge by Save Our Canyons and the Utah Environmental Congress. U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart said the Forest Service followed the law in renewing the permit.
A federal appeals court in Denver agreed with the judge Tuesday.
