Rap’s legendary battlesEvery great gangsta rappa has a great gangsta arch enemy. Here’s a bit of hip-hop history to get you caught up on rap’s feuds, past and presentBy Jed GottliebTupac vs. BiggieEast Coast versus West Coast, Puff Daddy’s label versus Suge Knight’s, Biggie versus Tupac and, in the end, two body bags this one’s the granddaddy of all rap feuds.First Tupac was shot six times on the Vegas strip as he was riding shotgun in Knight’s car and died four days later in the hospital. Why? Because Tupac claimed that he slept with Biggie’s wife? Because Knight’s a criminal who may have been deeply involved in the mob and street gangs? Because Tupac had an enemies list longer than Richard Nixon’s? Take your pick there are half dozen theories. Then, six months after Tupac’s death, Biggie, a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G., was murdered while leaving an L.A. party when six to 10 shots were fired into his SUV. Naturally, rumors ran rampant that the killing was revenge for Tupac’s death, but because both cases are unsolved it’s impossible to know.Snoop vs. Suge KnightBecause the hip-hop world isn’t complete without a Suge Knight feud, Snoop has picked up the gauntlet.Allegedly Snoop and Suge’s dispute began after Snoop left Suge’s label. As a response to Snoop’s disloyalty, Suge produced the song “Tha Row” that contained lyrics saying Suge slept with Snoop’s mom. Because that ain’t cool, Snoop’s mom is suing Suge. In part the lawsuit reads: “These plaintiffs are totally innocent victims being tormented as a means to force Snoop Dogg to suffer personal anguish and to take retaliatory action This is the same type of feud that led to the Tupac Shakur and Biggie … death.”Whether Snoop or his mom will see any money from Suge remains to be seen. Last week a judge ordered the rap mogul to pay $107 million to a woman who claims she helped him start Death Row Records. The Game vs. 50 CentJust when you thought poppin’ caps in a sucka’s ass was a thing of the past, 50 Cent and The Game reminded us why they call it gangsta rap. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader, this former teacher and student have little love for one another. Their feud started last month with 50 Cent booting The Game from his crew, G-Unit, for disloyalty, and escalated when someone took a few shots at Kevin Reed, one of The Game’s associates.A few days after the shooting, the two rappers appeared at a press conference at Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. While they did shake hands and talk about a cease-fire, they both looked like scolded school children cajoled into disingenuous apologies. The posturing and bravado seems funny until you realize that Reed was actually shot three times, and that 50 Cent has admittedly dealt crack to finance his rap career and is known for surviving nine gunshot wounds.Jed Gottlieb writes periodically for the Vail Trail and can be reached at wanderousjed@yahoo.com.Advance tickets for Snoop Dogg are now sold out at all Vail Valley locations.A limited number of tickets will be available the day of the show, at the gate, for $15.
