Hidden Treasure Yurt

Tom Boyd
Tom BoydThe new yurt at Hidden Treasure Yurts is spic-and-span after being installed in July of 2004.

Tucked high above the hamlet of Fulford, in Eagle County, is a pair of cozy yurts called the “Hidden Treasure Yurts.” They’ve long been known for their excellent access to backcountry skiing, snowboarding and snowshoe touring terrain, but they’re also a treat in the summer.

Located at about 11,000 feet, but accessible by car in the summertime, the yurts make an ideal base camp for trips to the top of New York Mountain (12,550 feet above sea level), over the ridge to New York Lake, or along the ridge to Nolan Lake. Good fishing is also available in the beaver ponds below Fulford.

In the winter the north-facing slopes provide safe and consistent snow with open glades. Mellow snowshoe or cross-country ski tours can easily be found below the yurts and above timberline. Spring skiing conditions can be enjoyed until late-May.

The yurts are fully equipped with cooking and eating utensils for a large group. In the winter, snow can be melted for water, but in the summer be sure to bring ample supplies for cooking, drinking and cleaning.

Food can be cooked on the propane stove or on the large wood-burning stove. In the evenings, light is provided by bright propane lamps for dining, reading, studying maps or playing games. A minimum of two nights is recommended if you truly want to have a quality backcountry experience.

There are two yurts.

– Yurt No. 1 (green) can comfortably sleep up to eight people per night. There are four single beds and two full size futon beds.

– Yurt No. 2 (blue) can comfortably sleep up to six people per night. There are three single beds and two full size futon beds.

Each person should bring their own sleeping bag (good bags rated to 0 degrees or below in the winter are highly recommended). Pillows are furnished, but please bring your own clean pillow cases and wash clothes or towels for your personal use. There is a well-made privy located between the two yurts.
