High Country Character: Peter Blick
Vail, CO, Colorado
Peter Blick, the resident DJ at Samana Lounge in Vail, has lived in the valley off and on for four years now. While DJing is his passion and how he makes a living, that’s not all he does. When not keeping the crowd dancing on weekends, he’s on the mountain snowboarding or hiking. He’s also an avid fly fisherman. He moved here from San Francisco after meeting Scotty Stoughton, one of the founders of Samana Lounge. Stoughton told Blick he’d love to have him as a DJ at the club and Blick signed on.
“It’s kind of been on since (then),” Blick said.
He returned to Vail with his wife, Nina, who he met at a Burning Man show a couple of years ago.
Blick is well connected in the national DJ scene, which allows him to pull bigger names like DJ Rap and Scumfrog to Samana, which in turn draws bigger crowds.
“Fridays and Saturdays are busy for us so I’m trying to build Thursdays and Sundays. That’s when I’m trying to bring some of these bigger DJs out,” Blick said.
Participate in The Longevity Project
The Longevity Project is an annual campaign to help educate readers about what it takes to live a long, fulfilling life in our valley. This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.
Blick started out as a radio DJ in 1996 and bought some equipment to teach himself how to DJ live a couple of years later. After shattering his heel while snowboarding he was stuck in his house for a month with a pair of turntables. During that time he taught himself the ins and outs of professional DJing. Now he can mix hip-hop, down-tempo, funk and ’80s music together while spinning, though he’s mostly into tech-house, he said.
“When I’m really feeling it and have the crowd with me then I can bang it out with tech-house,” Blick said.
PB: You have to gauge it and bringing in some of the bigger names has turned out successful for us. Not all of them can be winners but we’re … doing really well with it.
PB: I don’t really go out much as far as other places. I don’t go to see a lot of DJs that I’ve never heard.
PB: It’s pretty wide open right now. I’d like to see Samana continue to do well … I’d like to, at some point, do a little more production and promotion and a little less DJing. DJ fewer dates and make a lot more money. Just keep my energy up, you know.
PB: Santa Barbara just to hang out and chill with the family. San Francisco, I have friends in San Francisco. I’d really like to get out of the country here in a little bit. It’s going to be after this season. I think we’re going to go out to South Africa and do a little exploring.
