High schools have only one calendar contract

NWS Water Bottle PU 3-24

EAGLE COUNTY – Dave Scott has boxes of water bottles no one wants. The bottles are ostensibly a form of rah-rah for Eagle Valley High School, where Scott is the athletics director, and have a handful of corporate logos on them. The problem, Scott said, is that the bottles are poor quality. The bottles were also made without the school’s permission, so the school doesn’t see any of the money advertisers paid.Since this is apparently the season to solicit business for ads for high school-related items, Scott recently sent out a fax informing local businesses the school only works with one company, Media AllStars of San Diego, Calif. That company returns to the school part of the money it makes on the athletic calendars it prints.

“They’re great,” Scott said. “The rest of them are just scams as far as I’m concerned.”Both Scott and Battle Mountain High School Athletics Director Rich Houghton said if companies want to contribute money to local high schools, the most effective method is writing checks to the schools’ booster clubs. Those clubs print programs with advertising every year.”I’d be wary of any company that’s selling ads,” Houghton said. “Often it doesn’t benefit the school.”While Eagle Valley has an athletic calendar printed every year, Battle Mountain doesn’t.”We do our calendar on line,” Houghton said. “There are so many changes, it’s kind of pointless to print one.”

Both schools’ athletic directors said they get anywhere from a couple to several complaints a year from local businesses about companies trying to sell ads. As far as both men are concerned, the rah-rah sales are just a way to milk money out of local businesses.”And I don’t need any more crap,” Scott said.===============To learn more, call:• Eagle Valley High: Dave Scott, 328-8960
