High winds cause slow start for ski resorts

Daily Staff Report

Vail and Beaver Creek started out New Year’s Eve day closed, as high winds in the area prevented both resorts from opening on schedule.

As of about 10:50 a.m., Vail Mountain crews were beginning to start up lifts, but the resort said it would “take some prep time,” via Twitter. At 11:15 the resort Tweeted that Chair 8 and the Vista Bahn were undergoing their last checks and would be open shortly.

Beaver Creek appears to have opened Chairs 1, 2, 6, 12 and 24, according to Twitter updates.

Vail Mountain spokeswoman Liz Biebl said the Vista Bahn and Born Free lifts would open by about 12:20 p.m., while Chairs 3, 4 and 11 would be next. She said Chairs 14 and 10, and the Two Elk Lodge, would not end up opening at all Saturday.
