VAIL — On Sept. 21, 375 leaf peepers in Beaver Creek did more than enjoy the colors of fall — these participants of the sixth annual Hike, Wine & Dine raised over $95,000 for Jack’s Place and Shaw Regional Cancer Center.

Organized by the Shaw Outreach Team, proceeds from Hike, Wine & Dine help offset the operating costs for Jack’s Place to ensure patients of Shaw Regional Cancer Center can rest and recover from their treatments without worrying about a place to stay. Since opening in March 2007, Jack’s Place has provided more than 7,000 nights of respite for patients and their caregivers.

“We are so grateful to the Shaw Outreach Team for their generosity and vision on behalf of Jack’s Place and Shaw,” said Doris Kirchner, president and CEO of Vail Valley Medical Center. “These compassionate individuals dedicate their efforts to making the journey through cancer treatment a little easier for patients at Shaw.”

Sue Franciose, a member of the Shaw Outreach Team, has coordinated Hike, Wine & Dine since its inception.

“I’m honored to be a part of the Shaw Outreach Team and such a meaningful event,” she said. “In six years, we’ve raised over $300,000 for cancer patients in our community.”

Many of those patients, as well as others who have fought a battle with cancer, were honored at the event — participants purchased yellow and pink ribbons that adorned the trees to commemorate their loved ones.

As guests meandered along the scenic four-mile hike, they were greeted by the culinary geniuses from Splendido, Grouse Mountain Grill, Rimini, Chophouse, Park Hyatt, Osprey, The Dusty Boot and The Metropolitan who donated their talents to serve epicurean delights along the way.

“The food was incredible, and the support heartwarming,” Franciose said. “We are so grateful to everyone who participated, as well as our generous sponsors and talented chefs.”

Jack’s Place is a 12-room lodge for patients of Shaw Regional Cancer Center and their caregivers. With a pay-what-you-can philosophy, guests are invited to take respite at Jack’s for as long as they need while in treatment. Jack’s Place is funded by Shaw Outreach Team events and community donations. Jack’s Place and Shaw Regional Cancer Center are outpatient departments of Vail Valley Medical Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit medical center since 1965.
