HOLY CROSS WILDERNESS – Authorities continued Wednesday to search for a 54-year-old hiker missing on Mount of the Holy Cross since Tuesday, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office reported.Somewhere near timberline on Half Moon Trail, the man – whose home town is unknown and name is being withheld until his family is contacted – felt tired, Sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Thompson said. His fellow hikers told him to wait around 2:30 p.m., then pressed on before returning to find the man missing. The other hikers called authorities five hours later. Vail Mountain Rescue sent two rescuers Tuesday night to search for the man, Thompson said. Two rescue teams searched the Cross Creek, East Cross Creek and Holy Cross summit areas on Wednesday while members of the Army National Guard searched from a helicopter, Thompson said.A dog included in the rescue effort found a track Wednesday, but then lost the scent, Thompson said.Thompson said the man carried two bottles of water, a health bar and adequate clothing, Thompson said. He hiked occasionally, is in moderate shape, but has a history of high cholesterol, Thompson said. Those involved in the rescue effort hold out hope the man is alive.”The weather hasn’t been that devastating so there’s a pretty good chance he is (alive),” Thompson said.Rescuers planned to begin the search anew today. The hiker’s situation is similar to that of Michelle Vanek, who disappeared on Sept. 24, after becoming tired. Her friend left her while he summited Holy Cross and she was missing when he returned. Despite a massive search and rescue operation, Vanek was never found. Staff Writer J.K.
