‘Hip to be square’ at Sunlight

Daily Staff ReportVail Daily, Vail Colorado

GLENWOOD – “Walk Like an Egyptian” was playing on the radio, and Ferris Bueller was taking the day off. Greg LeMond won the Tour de France, and Mike Tyson won his first world boxing title. Add to that the births of the Olsen twins, Lindsay Lohan and “the flying tomato,” Shaun White, and 1986 was pretty darn cool. But the best thing about 1986? Lift tickets at Sunlight Mountain were only $15. This year, Sunlight Mountain celebrates its 20th annual Skier Appreciation Day on Jan. 5. And to make this year an even bigger party, the resort is bringing back the ’80s with one-piece ski suits, fluorescent colors, big hair and the tunes that stamped the decade. On Jan. 5, Sunlight features a $15 lift ticket ($12 if purchased in advance), drink specials, live music with Gwen Hill, DJ Rockin’ Rob, a live remote by KSPN, a costume party and more. Whoever best represents the ’80s in both their attire and attitude will win prizes.Discounted ($12) advance tickets are available at the Sunlight Mountain Resort Guest Services office, Sunlight’s downtown Ski and Bike Shop and the Glenwood Springs Community Banks location from today through Jan. 4. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the event at the Sunlight Ticketing Office ($15). All ticket sales proceeds go to the Garfield County United Way. For more information on Skier Appreciation Day or Student/Teacher Day at Sunlight Mountain Resort, call 970-945-7491 or e-mail suninfo@sunlightmtn.com.
