Historical Society meeting, auction Nov. 29

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – History isn’t always something you have to go searching for. Sometimes it comes to you.

The Eagle County Historical Society will demonstrate its “History Take-Out’ program at the annual meeting slated Nov. 29 at the Eagle Public Library. This is the hands-on program created by History Colorado (the Colorado Historical Society) for third- and fourth-grade students.

Meeting participants will use “artifacts” such as buffalo bones, a beaver hide and an assayer’s scale to learn about the movement of early people in Colorado from Native Americans to the miners of 1870. Artifacts including tools and clothing help teach about some of the pioneering industries in Colorado. Timelines, maps and old photographs add historical perspective to the lesson.

For the first time, this year’s meeting will also include a silent auction for a few “excess” items from the museum archives including antique bottles, branding irons, newspapers from the World War II area and magazines from the 1960s.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagle Public Library. The general public as well as ECHS members are invited to attend. Families are welcome.
