Hits & Misses: It’s been a great summer

Vail Daily EditorialVail CO, Colorado

Send your hit or miss to Opinion Editor Tamara Miller at tmiller@vaildaily.com.Hit: To Jeremy Windham, the local high school student who is collecting food, clothes, CDs and more to send to an army brigade in Iraq. Windhams Eagle Scout project has generated almost 100 care packages that will be sent out next week. Miss: To Minturn residents who make their whole town look bad by not cleaning up the junk in front of their homes. Minturn passed a law months ago that promised to fine those who refuse to pick up after themselves. Its time to start issuing those fines. Hit: To Mark Hurlbert, Karen Romeo and the Eagle County District Attorneys Office for getting a first-degree murder conviction in the death of Maria Madrid. This is the first first-degree murder conviction the office has had under Hurlberts tenure. Miss: To rising lift ticket prices that seem to be fueled more by the need for bragging rights than actual business cost increases. Aspen Skiing Co. announced this week it would raise its one-day lift ticket price during the peak ski season to $87, up $5 from last season. For the past several years, Vail has managed to top Aspens one-day lift ticket price. So should we plan on a lift ticket increase at Vail, which charged $85 last year? Hit: To the great, free entertainment weve been enjoying all summer, as well as the paid performances. Hot Summer Nights was a hit, as always, and the Bravo! music festival, which wraps up this week, always seems to end to soon. Luckily, the Vail International Dance Festival begins this week.
