Hits & Misses: Kudos for Avon’s wind energy

Vail Daily Editorial BoardVail CO, Colorado

Hit: To the town of Avon for making the decision to use clean, wind-powered energy to provide electricity for the town’s buildings. The town went a step beyond the town of Vail and Vail Resorts, which are offsetting their electricity use by purchasing wind power credits, by opting to use the real thing.Miss: To newly-appointed state Rep. Douglas Bruce of Colorado Springs for kicking a Rocky Mountain News photographer before being sworn into office. Bruce, an ardent anti-government activist, has managed to win election to one seat (El Paso County Commissioner) and then appointment to another. To paraphrase humorist P.J. ORourke, guys like Bruce go around proclaiming the evils of government, then get elected (or appointed) to prove the point. Hit: To covered curbside check-in at the Eagle County Regional Airport. Keeping the check-in stations covered has made check-in lines shorter and keeps baggage out of the snow.Hit: To Sweet Basil co-owner Matt Morgan for speaking out about the resorts labor problems. The restaurant wont be serving lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays because it doesnt have enough line cooks. The valleys worker shortage cannot be ignored.
